Hoooray! We did make it indeed. I'd say this was an awesome tour for everyone, but to speak for myself, it was like a combination of exotic vacation (and I fell in love with Norway's scenery), camp, college (sometimes I was teacher, sometimes student...), oh-- and unicycle tour/physical challenge. All around, an unforgettable and wonderful experience. I'm grateful to all the riders and support crew (you know who you are!) for their intrepid spirit and ever-positive attitudes, not to mention generosity (e.g. Ballerina cookies, fixing things, etc.) and humor. In short, I love you all.
I'm back in NYC. The strangest thing thus far was seeing the sun go down for the count and disappear utterly, leaving the city in darkness. How depressing. I miss our constant sun...
Oh, and Christian-- you're awesome and I definitely think you will pass your exam... Go for it!

But the track and field...despite the support I am scared that I won't make it. I'm still missing 4 to 5 inches for the shot put in my best trys and I'm still not the good sprinter I am supposed to be. Anyway, I'll keep on working. Phone note: I tried calling you, John, and got a voicemail message spoken by a Norwegian woman. Hmmm.
Incidentally, to dial Norway direct from the US, call 011-47 and then the 8-digit number. 47 is the country code, and 90, at least in John's case, is the city code (and don't drop the zero). But I'm not trying again until you update the info, bro (either a different # or word about your sex change -- maybe that was you speaking Norwegian!).

Hi gang! Glad to hear (and see, courtesy of the great updates) that the weather has mostly been kind. East Coast weather is holding up nicely, too -- summer has finally arrived (too bad there were only three days of spring). It's also nice to know that your knees are holding up for the most part; is this ride like the Pyrenees x 50 or is it not that bad?
Those pix of the hole in the mountain were amazing. Keep up the great camera work -- it's hard to wait for the updates, but it's always worth it!

Tomorrow there's the FoMoCo centennial car show at the FF Fjord dealer. Since Gregory Peck died, I've been reviewing the work of Nevil Shute Norway who wrote the book behind one of his best films. You'll have to read him when you get home. He was an aircraft stress and strain engineer, who owned his own aircraft mfg co., then he worked on rocket launchers for the Navy. I stumbled onto him way back when I was doing research on Norway, [the country.] By the way, if you check your map, to the west of Trondhjem is the town of Aure. (Ooh-rah). Or to ride the alps or the pyrenees, or both... Anyway, I'm here and I'm finally glad I made it to Norway. All I have now are good memories of a great group with great friends. You guys rock!!
Bruder, big hug to you. I don't know where my uni is yet. You may know what it feels like. Thanks for being there. And for everything else.
Nathan, eat on of those Mandel stangs for your Mr 20%. But, you know I found my master yesterday (spilljim fa...?!?) You should not have gone swimming;-) Thanks for a great time, for being there, for the fun riding...
Karen, keep on working. You are doing a great job!
Ryan, just keep on smiling! You are doing great in my eyes. Stay that way (uniwise and off the wheel).
John, had a great laugh with you! Looking forward to seeing you again.
Tanya, fun, fun, fun! Ride on!
Irene, thanks for the fun and the cool modeling for pictures.
Andy, thanks for everything! For organizing this trip, for having fun, for helping out... don't forget to tell me what I owe. I'll send it on the route ASAP.
Aaron, I don't think I need to say anything, do I?:-D
Elijah, hope you are doing better than better by now. Thanks for everything. I'm going to try to figure out the German name of the bird right now.
Connie, Mom, thank you! You are a great support person and a great person when not supporting. Hope to see you again soon. Slam some Dew for me when you get home.
I don't think I forgot anyone. I lost Mons though. I hope she will show up soon. Poor kitty...
By the way, it's 9.35 and the sun is setting. What's up with that? It feels weird.
Big thank you to all of you guys! I wish I was still part of the group. I had a butt-kicking time up there, and you are the reason for it! I don't feel any grief anymore, it's all good memories that carry me on smiling. I will definitely miss you guys. But I'll see you around. In Germany, in England, somewhere else in Europe, in the States, maybe even on Mars someday... But that's too far away, timewise. I'll see you guys. And right now you are all with me. In my heart. I will stay in contact with you via the guestbook and I will not forget any of the days. Climb some hills for me!

Christian, since the hills are no challenge, why not try them backwards? Or one-footed? Sounds like you're doing great! And Scot, it's amazing you could ride so well up those hills despite the extra weight of the 'bago. Of course, I ride up hills despite the extra weight of the rider!

Sounds like you had a great month Andy. Don't worry aobut the 50km without a dismount - you'll never have to do that on the tour. I prefer never going more than 20km without getting off and walking around a little. I think this helps long term keep down the soreness. Every other break should be a little longer and include food.
Have any of you had trouble with flats on the Coker? I have never had one even running the tire down to the 3rd ply.
Well, back to packing - just a few more things. 24 hours from now I should be over Greenland heading for London. See you all soon.

PS I just noticed you are bringing two spare tubes so I guess I'll leave my extra special one at home. It's extra special because it went on Scot's Arthritis ride as well as the Tasmanian tour.
PPS I am bringing extra cranks, 140 and 152 just in case the terrain is ridiculous. But I am fully a believer in 125s now.

Ride total 600km: actually did 822km, more than I expected
30km with no breaks: 30 km (May 2)
50km with without dismounting: 0, that is just too hard
30km for 5 days in a row: 5 days, May 6 to 10
15km of hills: Did only about 11km
15km of rain: 16km May 19
100km in a day: May 31
125km in two days: May 23-24
150km in three days: May 23-25
200km in four days: Got within 30km but didn't do it
I weighed my Coker with nothing in the luggage rack (except some tools) and it weight 19 pounds. Although, besides the luggage rack (trunk), I have a kevlar strip in my tire to help prevent flats. As it is a pain to change the tire/tube, I want to avoid getting a flat as much as I can.

25000' of climbing: did 23,900'
On my 100km ride yesterday, I was really weighted down. I was solo and unsupported so had 4L of water (2.5 on my back), tools, first aid, camera, jacket, food, cell phone, but no wallet/money. Felt like too much. I don't have a scale so I have no idea what the Hunter weighs. Heavy, setup that way, for sure. But it felt ok on the uphills. It was only 3500' of climbing (not a lot for 100km), but it all felt fine.

I am getting really excited for the tour. I thought I'd share with you how I did for training in May:
Total Kilometers ridden: 604.95 km
Average for the whole month: 16.6 km/h. This has risen considerably from April which was 15.44 km/h.
Toward the end of May my average was usually around 17.0-19.0 depending on the circumstances of the ride.
30 km with no breaks: yep, did 30.06
150 km within 3 days: yep, did 169 km
200 km within 4 days: yes, did 208 km
100 km in one day: so close, but no cigar. Did 95 km last Saturday.

Anotehr Q for all: considering we are likely to be soaked for days on end, what footwear are people bringing for rain-riding? Any special suggestions or tips as to what to avoid? I'm thinking the fast-drying, webbed Merril shoe (good traction, too). Who knows. Maybe it'll be very sunny...
This month has royally sucked for weather-- the worst in memory-- always cold and rainy. I haven't been terribly motivated to ride a lot, since I never have company to "enjoy" (i.e. suffer with me) the view. Booo hoooo rain is all I say.
I'm very pleased with my new HAWG Camelbak-- it's quite large, but feels light, and the mesh pads on the back are dreamy. Lots of space for extra stuff-- my Lego Space Center, tubes of oil paint and canvas (in case I want to do a quick painting of the scenery), folding chair, glue gun, extra diapers, fax machine, back issues of National Geographic, my old chess trophies, extra shoes and pants, and even a Clif Bar and some water. MAN, 125s are great! Cruising speed seems to be more like 13mph instead of 11-12 and 17-18mph on downhills is no problem at all. LOVE the brake. I had a 50km ride planned today but it got truncated to 40km or so due to a loose crank. I was carrying every tool EXCEPT the crank tightener. I was testing out riding with all the gear I'll have on the tour. Carrying 1.5L of water, first aid kit, jacket, camera, tools (plus work stuff: clothes, lunch, cell phone) was a lot to have on my back. I'm working now on a system to be able to put more stuff on the unicycle so less is on me. I think that is the way. I should end up with three water bottle holders, one for tools, two for water, plus my jacket mounted on the cycle. I'll still carry the camelbak for the rest of the stuff and extra water. Based on the weather reports, I'm bringing my fender - do you guys plan on using one?

Congratulations to the unicyclists on the 24 hours of Adrenalin! I just checked out the website. It is very impressive to look at the national solo men's and women's times. Your team completed on average one lap of 11 miles in about 1-1/2 hours on a mountain. That rocks.
I recently got a new CamelBak. (note: did you know that Camels don't actutally carry water in their humps, but rather fat...? This helps sustain them for many days without food). I thought that was a little ironic, but the camelBak I got for water is the "TrailBlaizer." On our recent training rides, Ryan Woessner renamed it Big Bertha. Besides limiting myself on what I can bring, I love it.
Last weekend we went into Wisconsin for some training rides. Friday, we started in Menomonie, and headed out towards Eau Claire. Luckily, Karl, a fellow unicyclist (who joined us on bike) had a friend in Eau Claire who agreed to pick us up and drive us back to Menomonie. We soon learned that he was also a Gay Mortician. So I thought we would be lucky and get to ride back to the start in a herse, but alas we rode in a large van that picked up the bodies to take them to the funeral home. Andy and I sat on the body cot in the back. I asked him if it was clean, and he said, "on the outside". Man, that was definately something I will remember for the rest of my life.
Friday we completed about 60km. Saturday we did another 75km with Ryan and Karen Woessner. It was a nice training weekend. The weather cooperated nicely with us.
I can't believe that we start the tour so quickly. I am leaving next Thursday with Andy and am finishing up some last minute packing.

Ok, 24 Hours of Adrenalin is over, and I'm back to road riding. I did something wild today: put 125mm cranks on my Coker. It was amazing! I was cruising down a hill and it felt fast, like maybe 16mph. I looked down and I was going 17.5! I put in 32km today and it was great. I'll have 125s in Norway with longer ones as a backup in case it's ridiculously steep. I guess you all know this as other than Scot and Bronson I'm probably the only other person not using 125s before this.
Ok, so how was 24 Hours? It was great! I'm working on a longer writeup for the newsgroup, but you guys would be interested in the cycles we rode. There were 5 of us (me, Bronson, Scot, Bruce and Rob) who Cokered every lap. Rob was on 158mm cranks and the rest of us used 175mm. I was able to climb the famous "Hurl Hill" that was so far out of reach last year as to be a joke (that was with 152mm cranks). The other 7 guys used 29" cycles and Munis, and one guy had a 26x3 Gazz. Both teams did 14 laps and amazingly, our team actually beat a bike team in our category! We came in 41st place out of 42 5-person teams where the sum of the ages is between 150 and 199. Sounds great until you know the name of the team we beat: the "Not Ready for 24 Hours Players". They managed 12 laps in 20.5 hours, just slightly faster than us, but then they were done in and we kept going.
Besides the fun of hanging out with your friends and riding, the best part of these 24 Hours events is the feedback from the other cyclists. Again, we had 100% positive comments. I got to ride with several cyclists talking, and sometimes they stayed back behind me to watch how I rode the singletrack (this would always inspire me to go as fast as possible). I got to talk and ride with Tinker Juarez, a legend in 24 Hour racing - he won the National title again at this race. He's amazing and he's almost as old as me! He rode twenty-one 12.5 mile laps that supposedly have 2350' of climbing each - do the math. Yow.
Photos are up at http://community.webshots.com/album/73781514FrSPiC
Race results are at www.24hoursofadrenalin.com - click on Race Results. You can even see each of our lap times and how they compare to the bikes.
I have only one more day to train this week since we're off to Telluride for MountainFilm on Thursday morning. Back to Muni there - Kris and I are planning to get away from the films for some Colorado mountain riding!
Have fun training,
Nathan

Usually, the larger the camelbak the more likely you will fill it. But, on the NUT, we most likely will be carring more clothes and maybe a bigger one wouldn't be all that bad of an idea. I have a rack on my uni now so I can reduce the Camelbak weight.

Equipment update: I met with Rick Hunter this morning to look at bending my KH36 frame to fit the wider "SuperCoker" wheel Dave Stockton built for me. He offered to give it a try but with no guarantee and he didn't sound that hopeful. He showed me a couple of Hunter36s that he made recently and offered to make me one to fit the wide hub for $25 extra. Once I verified he will use the newer double-bolt Magura braze-ons I went ahead and ordered it. He thinks he can finish it quickly so I can use it on the tour. You can guess what color it will be!
I've put over 50 miles on Bronson's "Terminator" and have finally got comfortable on it. It is amazing for cruising along on flat or down! I didn't have a speedo, but I think it's really fast. And I did over 10 miles without stopping last night and didn't feel sore at all. But, it is custom fit to him and my legs are quite a bit longer and rub the frame. The pedals feel too close together for me. Plus it's heavy. It's a fantastic machine, but it looks like I'll be on a KH36 or Hunter36 for the tour.
Today is my first day off riding for a long time. I'm also taking off tomorrow so that we can kick ass at 24 Hours! Then back to training next week.

Yesterday, I went on a 63km ride. It was going well until about half way into the ride where I was switching from one trail to another and got lost. Really lost. I thought I saw the path I wanted and while it started out nice, it soon got really rough and I forded more than one stream on my Coker. Eventually, I saw a road and climbed out of the gully that I was in. I had no clue where I was at that point. The worst part was everything looked familiar; I was worried that I got turned around and was going entirely the wrong way. I ended up calling my mom and telling what intersection I was at. She looked up the intersection on MapQuest and proceeded to give me directions so I could get on the right trail. Thanks Mom. Too bad I wont be able to call her when I get lost in Norway.
Im looking at my Coker manual and it says that I should take it in and have it tuned up every 6000km. As I just hit the 6000km mark, I figure I should bring it in and have the windshield wiper belt replaced (or whatever they do for a Coker tune-up). I suppose I should get the tire rotated while I have it in the shop. I think I also need a new battery, as it sometimes starts a bit hard, especially when it is cold or rainy. The sound system with the six CD player and mega subwoofer isnt really working so Ill probably have them look at that as well. But, that may be too expensive to fix so I may just have to keep bringing my portable MP3 player. The auto dimming rear view mirror doesnt seem to auto dim or even act as a mirror. I wonder what they do about that? What I always worry about when I take my Coker into the shop is the response of the mechanic when they see my unicycle. What if they see my Coker and just laugh? After getting themselves under control they may tell me that they dont work on antique long distance unicycles like that. They may tell me to upgrade to a newer model. But, I like my Coker. Even if it is just over two years old, it has served me well and got me through some pretty rough spots. Maybe instead of taking it to the shop, Ill just have friend, Neil, look at it. He seems to know my particular brand of Coker and may still have some spare parts lying around. My Coker is pretty special, I dont want to trust just any grease monkey with it. If you see me around with only half a wheel, you will know the tune-up didnt go so well. Wish me luck.

In repsonse to Irene's query:
I've been averaging 18k on hilly terrain, 20+k on flatter roads.
I did, indeed, have a nice birthday ride (thanks Nathan for the wishes). Since I had company and couldn't take too much time away, I rode 11 miles of hilly terrain without a break and in a time of 48 minutes. When I got off, my legs felt like jelly-- which means... I've got to train a lot more. But it was a lovely day (though ever since it's been cold and rainy, ugh).

Nathan,
Is there a site where I could learn more about your 24 hours of adrenaline tour? That sounds like a wild ride. So I'm guessing that Scot is riding, you are riding, Bruce... (?)
What are you all averaging on your unicycle rides? I've been raising my average to around 16.3-17 km/h, the boost came after reading Christian's story! How impressive, 24 km/h for 40 km.
I rode to Mpls today to go to a photography store and get a new lens cover for my camera. To my surprise as I was checking out, there was a Norwegian Unicycle Tour card on the top of the keyboard. Just sitting there. So of course, I pointed and said, "oh my gosh. Do you know the person who gave you that card?" and my cashier said he didn't but it was probably one of their regular unicycle folk--(Elijah).
This story is not as good as the Subway almost eating John alive, but I thought I'd share.

Hope you all had a great weekend riding - we sure did. This morning, I had the pleasure of riding Bronson's Terminator Coker in to work. This is the wild looking one that Ed Mosimann made for him and he rode in the Tasmania tour. He even offered it to me for NUT.
The ride is SO different from a regular 36" unicycle. The difference is like what you'd feel stepping off your skinny tired road bike and onto a motorcycle. Love that suspension! But it will take a while getting used to and I'm not at all convinced I should ride it in Norway.

John, have a great birthday ride! Glad you're back on the unicycle since the subways out there sound scary. I'm really glad you weren't badly hurt!!
This weekend I have to convert my KH36 over to "24 Hours Config" (long cranks, no Wyganowski extension, Reeder handle instead of GB, and finally adding the hydraulic brake). Sunday we're doing a "24 hours training ride": road/dirt ride in the morning, about 13 miles, lunch, then Muni ride in the afternoon, about 9 miles, all with lots of climbing. The race is next weekend, and after that I can concentrate just on road riding.
Have a great weekend of riding everyone!

Hey guys, I'm 33. Thanks for the song and dance!
Of course I wouldn't have been taking that damned subway if it weren't for my uni being in the shop, getting fixed with a brake... Speaking of brake-- so far, I love it. I haven't played with it too much (kind of scared I'll switch it too far and go flying), but it's a handsome little devil and certainly makes parking a lot easier. But then, of course all of you knew that already...
Well, it's glorious weather; off for the big ride today... wheeeeeee!

Yesterday I went for a ride early in the morning, 7 am. I did this as the weather was going to only get worse during the day. Anyway, I went farther than I planned and on my way home there was a bridge that was under construction. The detour was about two miles but I wanted to get home. When I went up to the bridge, a whole group of construction workers started the normal unicycle banter. After they got that out of the way, they stopped all work on the bridge so I could cross. Nice of them.
Wildlife sighting Riding along the country roads, I have seen quite a few local animals (other than cows). The most amazing one has been a red tailed fox. They are usually really wary of people and this is the first time I have ever seen out in Hutchinson. The fox was walking toward me on the side of the road; he didnt see me on the uni coming at him until I was 10 meters from him. He saw me and took off across the field (he didnt even have time ask me where my other wheel was).
Happy birthday John. Maybe you should ride your unicycle instead of taking a subway.

To make sure John reads this by his birthday, I'm taking it upon myself to typesing another birthday song!
Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear John, Happy Birthday to you.
And many more...
I hope you do not have any bad encounters with subways again. That sounds downright freaky.
Here's to a fabulous day.

Here's something NOT to do (trust me, I just did, and it's not good):
Run for a subway, have the doors close in your face, slip so that your leg falls all the way down the space between the train and the platform (bruising and scraping your leg deeply along the way down), and then jump out before the train drags you to death. Yes-- that what I did... I'm not proud, but I had to share. Leg is fine (though ugly like a butchered steak).
